College Overview

The College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Qingdao University originated from the former Applied Chemistry major of Qingdao University, the former Fine Chemical Engineering major of Shandong Textile Engineering Institute, and the former Chemistry Teacher Education major of Qingdao Normal College. The college upholds the spirit of "Seeking Truth, Innovation, Integration, and Striving," cultivating over ten thousand outstanding talents working in education, research, industry, commerce, and government agencies, with talent cultivation quality, teaching and research level, and social service ability ranking among the top in the university.

The college offers three undergraduate majors: Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Technology, and Chemistry Teacher Education. Applied Chemistry was selected as one of the first batch of national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, Chemical Engineering and Technology passed the national engineering education professional certification and was selected as a provincial first-class undergraduate major construction site; Chemistry Teacher Education has successfully passed the second-level certification for teacher education majors by the Ministry of Education. The college has a first-level discipline doctoral program in Chemistry, two first-level discipline master's programs in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and Technology, and two second-level discipline professional master's programs in Chemical Engineering and Subject Teaching (Chemistry). In 2016, Chemistry entered the ESI global top 1% and was selected as a key construction first-class discipline in Shandong Province. In 2025, it entered the ESI global top 1‰, with discipline strength continuing to rise.

The college currently has over 120 faculty and staff, including 37 professors, 59 associate senior titles, over 95% holding doctoral degrees, and over 50% having overseas study and work experience. Among full-time teachers, there is 1 chief professor, 2 National Outstanding Youth, 2 Shandong Province Taishan Scholars, 14 Shandong Province Young Taishan Scholars, 2 Shandong Province Outstanding Youth, 9 Shandong Province Excellent Youth, and 6 Shandong Province Youth Innovation Teams.

The college actively promotes the strategy of revitalizing the college through research, adheres to connotative high-quality development, and has strong research capabilities. It has provincial-level teaching and research platforms such as the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Intelligent Molecular Science and Engineering, the Shandong Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center for Key Hydrogen Energy Materials and Technology in Universities, the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Functional Molecules and Materials in Universities, the Shandong Provincial Sino-Japan Carbon Nanomaterials Cooperative Research Center, and the Shandong Provincial Demonstration Center for Chemistry Experiment Teaching in Higher Education Institutions, as well as municipal-level platforms such as the Qingdao Municipal Key Laboratory of Molecular Manufacturing and Precision Health, the Qingdao Municipal Technology Innovation Center for Optoelectronic Biosensing and Its Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Applications, the Qingdao Municipal Technology Innovation Center for Green Hydrogen Energy Materials and Equipment, the Qingdao Municipal Engineering Research Center for Surface and Interface Analysis and Measurement Technology, and the Qingdao Municipal Engineering Technology Research Center for Comprehensive Utilization of Marine Bromine Resources. In the past five years, the college has published over 1,000 high-level SCI research papers, undertaken over 50 National Natural Science Foundation projects and over 100 provincial and ministerial projects, authorized over 120 national invention patents, and received over 90 million yuan in various project funding; it has won 3 Shandong Provincial Natural Science Second Awards, 1 Shandong Provincial Youth Science and Technology Award, and other honors. It has established long-term connections with well-known universities and research institutions at home and abroad, including in the United States, Germany, and Japan, and has established long-term cooperative relationships with dozens of enterprises domestically and internationally.

The college always adheres to the training philosophy of "student-oriented," strengthening "one-two-three-four-five" collaborative education, with remarkable results in talent cultivation. Currently, there are over 930 full-time undergraduate students and over 470 master's students; the undergraduate further study rate has exceeded 50% for consecutive years, the master's further study rate exceeds 30%, and over 70% of students are admitted to 985, 211, and double first-class universities for further studies. The college implements a "innovation + practice" dual-mentor talent training model, winning over 30 first and second prizes in the China International College Students' Innovation Competition, the "Challenge Cup" National College Students' Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, and various national and provincial chemistry, chemical engineering, and teacher education competitions. Graduates mostly engage in scientific research, technology development, production, and business management in domestic well-known universities, research institutes, enterprises, and public institutions.

The college adheres to the educational model of "ideological and political guidance promotes character development, and academic atmosphere construction promotes talent formation," with party building work fully supporting student growth. The "Chemistry Department Party Branch" won the first batch of national party building demonstration branches, and the "Student First Party Branch" won the fourth batch of national party building demonstration branches; in addition, the college has successively been approved as a Shandong Provincial party building demonstration branch, an advanced grassroots party organization in the Shandong Provincial education system, and a "dual leader" teacher party branch secretary studio in Shandong Province universities. The Qingdao University Flag Guard, formed primarily with outstanding students from our college, has gone through nearly 30 years of hardships and has become a banner of patriotic education at Qingdao University, winning the Shandong Provincial "College Student Ideological and Political Work Innovation Award" and Qingdao City "Top Ten Youth Volunteer Service Collectives." The college has successively won honorary titles such as Qingdao University "Advanced Student Work Unit," "May Fourth Red Flag Youth League Committee (General Branch)," and "Advanced Graduate Employment Unit" for many consecutive years.

Major Description
Applied Chemistry The Applied Chemistry major was established in 1987 and is one of the first batch of national first-class undergraduate major construction sites. It has master's degree programs in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and Technology, a doctoral program in first-level discipline Chemistry, and shares the doctoral program in Materials Science and Engineering. In July 2026, Chemistry entered the ESI global top 0.586‰ and is a key construction first-class discipline in Shandong Province. Core courses include Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Structural Chemistry, Chemical Engineering Principles and Experiments, Natural Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis, Green Chemistry and Technology, Introduction to Marine Chemical Products, Electroanalytical Chemistry and Biosensing, Professional Experiments, etc. Degree conferred: Bachelor of Science.
Chemical Engineering and Technology This major was founded on the basis of the Fine Chemical Engineering major established in 1992 and the Chemical Pharmacy major established in 1993. The Chemical Engineering and Technology discipline is a first-level discipline doctoral program cultivation discipline at Qingdao University, supporting our university's chemistry and engineering disciplines to enter the ESI top 1‰ (Note: in July 2026, Engineering entered the ESI global top 0.611‰). It has first-level discipline master's degree granting authority in Chemical Engineering and Technology and professional master's degree granting authority in Chemical Engineering. Core courses include Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering Principles, Chemical Reaction Engineering, Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Chemical Engineering Design, Chemical Technology, Organic Synthesis Unit Reactions, Fine Chemicals Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Industrial Catalysts, etc. Degree conferred: Bachelor of Engineering.
Chemistry (Teacher Education) The Chemistry (Teacher Education) major originated from the Qingdao Normal College established in 1984. In 1993, the Chemistry Department of Qingdao University Normal College was established. In 2013, it was approved as a second-level master's degree program in Subject Teaching (Chemistry). In 2016, with the adjustment of disciplines and majors, the Chemistry Teacher Education major, together with Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering and Technology majors, established the Qingdao University College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and the Chemistry Teacher Education major established the Chemistry Education Department. Curriculum: 1. Main discipline: Chemistry; 2. Core courses: Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry (including Instrumental Analysis), Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Structural Chemistry, Chemistry Subject Teaching Theory, Professional Chemistry Experiments, etc.; 3. Main practical teaching components: Chemistry experiments (including basic chemistry experiments and professional experiments), innovation and entrepreneurship training, educational observation, educational internship, educational research, social practice, graduation thesis (design), etc. Degree conferred: Bachelor of Science.

Campus Arrangement

Before 2026, freshmen were at Jinjialing Campus, and sophomores to seniors were at Fushan Campus. It is known that 2026 freshmen will be at Fushan Campus from freshman to senior year; the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is located in the Boguan Building, West Campus, Fushan Campus.

Postgraduate Recommendation and Employment

In 2025, among 120 domestic further study destinations, 83 people entered 985/211/double first-class construction universities (excluding University of Chinese Academy of Sciences), accounting for about 69.2%. 12 people entered relevant institutes of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, accounting for about 10.0%, among which 2 entered one of the four major chemistry institutes. From the 985 destinations, Ocean University of China has the most, with 9 people, followed by Harbin Institute of Technology with 5 people; Dalian University of Technology, Xiamen University, Nankai University, and Beijing Institute of Technology each have 3 people. From the 211 destinations, Beijing University of Chemical Technology has 10 people, which is a very concentrated destination in the entire list; followed by East China University of Science and Technology and Fuzhou University, each with 5 people. From the double first-class destinations, Southern University of Science and Technology has the most, with 4 people, accounting for 66% of a single double first-class university.
